N.B. Annie Welch has been added to the roll of honour. I have been reliably informed that Annie did in fact play for the Dick, Kerr Ladies, but had to use a different name as her father was totally against her playing football.  He actually threw her boots on the fire in the hope it would prevent her taking any further part, but it had the opposite affect and made her even more determined to play.  In trying to put him off the scent, Annie would pretend she was going to watch her brother Joe, and she got him to carry the boots when they left the house. Hopefully, her place in history can now be assured.
